The sixth annual 18th Century Artisan’s Show will be held on Friday, February 1, and Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Country Cupboard Restaurant and Best Western Inn at Lewisburg, PA.  This event showcases over 100 tables displaying the finest Contemporary American Folk Art, antique muzzleloading rifles and component parts suppliers in the country.  A diverse group of artisans and craftsmen will be exhibiting their work, including period jewelers, potters, furniture makers, flintlock rifle, powder horn, knife and bag makers, leatherworkers, tin ware, silver work, historic publications, painters and more!

Several antique Kentucky rifle displays of the finest rifles will be on hand for viewing.  Many of the antique muzzleloading rifles and related antiques that are displayed will be from the local Snyder and Union county area.

The show is open to the public for an admission of $5.00 per day.  Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2012.

The third Fine Folk Art and Arms show will be held at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. This new facility and museum has a small cafe and ample FREE parking. Admission is five dollars for those over 16 years of age, but those under 16 can attend at no charge when accompanied by a paying adult.

This venue features 18th Century crafts and arms in the best folk and high-styled forms being created today! The artisan’s work includes flintlock firearms, paintings, horn work, handcrafted furniture, pottery, jewelry, leather goods and other handmade items.

There will be several HCH members displaying their work including Mark Thomas, Mike Small, Bob Albrecht, Tim Sanner, John DeWald, Edwin McDilda, Frank Willis and John Proud.

The 2012 Dixon’s Gunmakers Fair is over and we have the winners of the HCH Raffle. I want to thank the following people for their generous contribution to the guild’s raffle:

This complete set was amazing and everyone who saw it really admired the craftsmanship.  

I am also pleased to announce that from the kindness of some other members we were able to give away three more prizes- a sash by Kris Polizzi and two really nice powder measures made from antler by Terry Morgan. These three extra pieces are a nice testament to the craftsmanship that is in our guild.

A new history buff in the making admires a Bottiger horn at the 2010 Homecoming.

 

The HCH is getting ready to set-up and do a little demonstrating at the Museum of Appalachia Fall Homecoming this year. The event will be held at the Museum in Norris, TN from October 11th through the 14th. October 11th will be set aside for students from the local school system to come out and view the demonstrations. This School Day is now firm.

 

As of now, we are planning to demonstrate as many aspects of horn work as possible to the public over the three days of the event. In the past we have accomplished some prep-work, scraping, smoothing, carving, engraving, and even fitting a couple of plugs…fine work indeed. This year we will add pressing to that list. And who knows maybe some turning.

 

The plans are to set up under my fly so that we will have more shade that was offered by the corn crib in the past. Other tenting arrangements can be made if anyone has any suggestions. All participants of the delegation of HCH members will need to be “in uniform” for the entire event. Period clothes (18th or 19th Century workman or civilian clothes) will work for this event.

 

I look forward to attending this event with all who can come down. If you can’t come, you are missing a wonderful opportunity to show off the very best that the HCH has to offer to the public. The staff at the museum are very excited to have us back this year.

 

We are allowed to sell our makings during the event. If we sell, there is a minor division of proceeds with the Museum. Those proceeds are considered donations to the Museum and are tax deductible (of course consult your income tax preparer).

 

Please come and support your organization at the Museum of Appalachia Fall Homecoming. Also, please spread this request to other members that any of you may know that would enjoy coming out to support the cause. I (Billy Griner) am the point of contact and organizer for this showing. There are lots of diversions right at hand for spouses and family who want to tag along. Bluegrass music, mountain music, demonstrations of old skills and crafts and just the enjoyment of numerous period structures and barnyard animals. How do all of those great photographs in the Contemporary Longrifle Association’s American Tradition happen? The photos come about by great coordination and preparation and then doing the photography. I watched David Wright, the Art Director for the magazine, in action at a Kentucky rifle show at the Museum of Appalachia earlier this year. He was in motion the whole time and I am sure they came away with some great photos.

I spoke with David Wright, who is a HCH and a CLA member. He informs us that in the next issue of American Tradition (January 2013) the feature article will be on pistols. In the following issue an article on fowlers and smoothbore firearms will be featured . So that means he needs specimens to photograph.

 

David Wright is asking anyone who has a piece, either contemporary or original that you feel would be worthy of including in the articles to please bring it to the show for us to photograph. They will photograph all pieces as time allows. If you know of a firearm owned or made by someone else, please contact them to bring to the show.

Once at the show please seek out David Wright or Mel Hankla with your piece to be photographed.

Summer just arrived and if you marked your calendar as you were told to do, you know that Dixon’s is just around the corner so go check your calendar, make sure you have July 27-29 marked for Dixon’s and start making plans to attend. For detailed information on the overall event schedule go to the Dixon’s website at www.dixonmuzzleloading.com; if that doesn’t peak your interest, nothing will.

The Honourable Company of Horners will once again gather and celebrate our Eighth Annual Summer Reception at the Jacobsburg Historic Site.

As you know, our Guild is involved in many aspects of Dixon’s to include the seminars, teaching the Junior Work Shop for powder horns, manning the HCH table, hosting the Friday evening barbecue, and assisting in the gun and accouterment judging. On top of all that, many of our members involved in these activities also have signed up for tables so they can sell their hand made goods. If there is any time left over, well there are friends to see and supplies to pick up. Overall, it is a busy, but hectic and fun filled weekend!

Guild members giving seminars include John Proud (Historic Powderhorn Artistry), Jeff Bibb (Design of The Southern Bag), Calvin Tanner (The Artfull Bag), Art DeCamp (Pennsylvania Screw Tip Powder Horns), Frank Willis (Finish of the Hunting Bag) and Roland Cadle (Horn Making 101). To look through a listing of these and other seminars, the Dixon’s website has the specific date, time and location. This is imperative because if you don’t personally plan and schedule your time, you will certainly fall short of all the things you want to do while there.

Help is definitely needed to man the HCH table in the Horners’ tent. Each year Chuck Dixon gives the Guild a table which is used to answer questions, assist with membership applications, and sell HCH items such as hats, pins, T-shirts and past issues of The Horn Book. If you would like to assist in manning the table, please contact Dick Toone at (609) 261-3415; any and all volunteers are greatly appreciated!

The Guild’s Friday evening chicken reception will once again take place on July 27th, from 6-9 PM at the Jacobsburg Historical Society just north of Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Another feast is in the planning and all Guild members and guests are invited. It is requested that you both RSVP no later than July 18th as well as forward your payment to Art DeCamp. Cost is the same as last year at $25 per person, so come on out.
