Last year the crew from The Science Channel’s “How It’s Made” spent twelve hours with our own HCH member Mike Small. They chose Mike to help with a segment on how to build a powder horn.

Here is an opportunity for those who want to learn to make a powder horn. Learn to make a powder horn from Old Salem gunsmiths Bill Bailey and Blake Stevenson. This is a two-part class held on two consecutive Saturdays at the Single Brothers’ Workshop.

Students will learn to shape the spout, fit the base-plug and will leave with a completed powder horn. The materials including a horn will be provided and the horns have some of the prep work done on them.  Tools will be provided for the students use.

For those who want to engrave (scrimshaw) their horns, help will be provided as time allows.

As a special treat, gunsmith Bill Bailey will bring a Revolutionary War engraved powder horn carried by a Patriot ancestor for the students to see.

Conner Prairie Interactive Park – Fishers, Indiana

This five-day class taught by Art DeCamp, will focus on each participant making a Southern Style banded powder horn with an applied horn tip.  The lathe work necessary to make and fit applied horn bands, turned horn tips, plus the wooden butt plug will be learned and practiced by each participant.

The class will discuss the history, and varieties of Southern style horns, along with how to select the proper horn, turn and fit applied horn bands and the use of a lathe for this purpose.  In addition, shaping, scraping, finishing and coloring of horns, will be presented.  Original antique horns and photo references will be used to expose participants to historically correct examples. 

As time permits during the week, an introduction to heating and molding/shaping of horn will be taught as participants can also expect to make a pressed horn item, such as a spoon, shoe horn, fork, comb, etc.  along with their completed Southern Style powder horn.

This class is aimed at helping HCH members who wish to advance in the Guild structure with developing and practicing the required skills for this process.  The class will be very helpful to anyone interested in improving their horn turning, heating, pressing and shaping skills. 

For the cost of the class, participants can expect to take away the knowledge, AND at least one completed banded powder horn, a horn accoutrement and possibly a second horn or item depending on time available.

The HCH’s own Master Horners, Roland Cadle and Art DeCamp, will be giving an intermediate class  on horn building April 13-14, 2012 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.
