October 8-12, 2012 – Southern Style Banded Horn Class, Conner Prairie Interactive History Park
Southern Style Banded Horn Class
Mon.–Fri., October 8-12, 2012 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Conner Prairie Interactive Park – Fishers, Indiana
This five-day class taught by Art DeCamp, will focus on each participant making a Southern Style banded powder horn with an applied horn tip. The lathe work necessary to make and fit applied horn bands, turned horn tips, plus the wooden butt plug will be learned and practiced by each participant.
The class will discuss the history, and varieties of Southern style horns, along with how to select the proper horn, turn and fit applied horn bands and the use of a lathe for this purpose. In addition, shaping, scraping, finishing and coloring of horns, will be presented. Original antique horns and photo references will be used to expose participants to historically correct examples.
As time permits during the week, an introduction to heating and molding/shaping of horn will be taught as participants can also expect to make a pressed horn item, such as a spoon, shoe horn, fork, comb, etc. along with their completed Southern Style powder horn.
This class is aimed at helping HCH members who wish to advance in the Guild structure with developing and practicing the required skills for this process. The class will be very helpful to anyone interested in improving their horn turning, heating, pressing and shaping skills.
For the cost of the class, participants can expect to take away the knowledge, AND at least one completed banded powder horn, a horn accoutrement and possibly a second horn or item depending on time available.

Bring your Antique and Contemporary Firearms to the 2012 CLA Show for Photographing
How do all of those great photographs in the Contemporary Longrifle Association’s American Tradition happen? The photos come about by great coordination and preparation and then doing the photography. I watched David Wright, the Art Director for the magazine, in action at a Kentucky rifle show at the Museum of Appalachia earlier this year. He was in motion the whole time and I am sure they came away with some great photos.
I spoke with David Wright, who is a HCH and a CLA member. He informs us that in the next issue of American Tradition (January 2013) the feature article will be on pistols. In the following issue an article on fowlers and smoothbore firearms will be featured . So that means he needs specimens to photograph.
David Wright is asking anyone who has a piece, either contemporary or original that you feel would be worthy of including in the articles to please bring it to the show for us to photograph. They will photograph all pieces as time allows. If you know of a firearm owned or made by someone else, please contact them to bring to the show.
Once at the show please seek out David Wright or Mel Hankla with your piece to be photographed.
Thanks for reading,
Rick Sheets
HCH’s John DeWald Interviewed by The Luminary
It is always nice to see one of our own in the historical arts being highlighted in the mainstream press. It is even nicer to read the article when the writer gets it “right!” The HCH thanks Barbara C. Barrett (with The Luminary) for writing this great article on John DeWald.
Please follow this link to read an interview of our John DeWald by on July 3, 2012.
The Winning Horn Cup from the 2012 Annual Meeting and an Interesting Link
The cup is better in person, so be sure to have a look at it at the next meeting. The sitting Guildmaster will be toasting with it!
Mike Burke is a new Journeyman with the HCH and like most horner’s that are very active, he is not bashful when it comes to sharing information.
Mike brought to our attention a very interesting link from the Worshipful Company of Horners from the United Kingdom. Enjoy the information and our thanks go to Mike for sharing.
